During French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to China, 36 Chinese and French companies signed 18 cooperation agreements. Energy cooperation not only includes traditional energy such as oil, gas, and nuclear energy, but also extends toSolar Power, offshore wind power,Hydrogen Energy, energy storage and other new energy sources.

At the invitation of President Xi Jinping, French President Emmanuel Macron paid a state visit to China from April 5 to 7. On the afternoon of April 6, President Xi Jinping held talks with President Macron. Both sides agreed that the general direction of the China-France comprehensive strategic partnership of stability, mutual benefit, pioneering and upward development should be adhered to, bringing new prospects to China-EU relations and making new contributions to the international community's cooperation in responding to global challenges. On the 7th, the two sides issued a China-France joint statement.

In the China-France joint statement, the word "energy" appeared 6 times, the word "climate" 9 times, and the word "carbon neutrality" 4 times. It is obvious that deepening the low-carbon transformation of energy and jointly addressing climate change have become the key issues of China-France cooperation.

China-France energy cooperation has a long history. In recent years, Chinese and French energy companies have carried out a series of cooperation in the fields of oil and gas, nuclear energy, and renewable energy, and have achieved fruitful results. Based on the friendly cooperation in the past, the two countries will explore more cooperation potential in the energy field in the future and continue to write a new chapter in China-France energy cooperation.

The scope of cooperation has been significantly expanded

During Macron's visit to China, the energy cooperation achievements launched by Chinese and French enterprises can be found everywhere. On April 6, the fifth meeting of the China-France Entrepreneurs Committee was held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. 36 enterprises from both sides signed 18 cooperation agreements in the fields of manufacturing, green, new energy, innovation, etc., which not only involved traditional energy fields such as oil and gas, nuclear energy, but also solar power generation, offshore wind power, hydrogen energy, energy storage, etc., which have become the future cooperation direction of Chinese and French enterprises.

"China and France have a long history of cooperation in the energy sector, especially in the field of nuclear energy, which has been carried out for 40 years. The energy authorities of the two countries have established a good dialogue and cooperation mechanism over the years," Zhang Jianhua, Director of the National Energy Administration of China, emphasized when meeting with EDF President and CEO Raymond and Framatome Chairman and CEO Fontana. "I hope that Chinese and French companies will continue to work hard to explore new cooperation opportunities on the basis of consolidating existing cooperation projects and continuously deepen the new connotation of China-France energy cooperation."

Judging from the latest Sino-French joint statement signed by both sides, China and France have reached cooperation in promoting energy transformation, addressing climate change, reducing emissions in the construction sector, and other areas. At the same time, they also proposed to strengthen communication in multiple environmental protection fields such as ecological protection and promoting the improvement of global nuclear governance. Many experts interviewed told the reporter of China Energy News that the space for energy cooperation reflected in the Sino-French joint statement has been expanded more than before.

Du Xiangwan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and former vice president, pointed out in an interview with reporters: "China and France have successively proposed carbon neutrality goals in the past two years. Against the backdrop of global response to climate change, the industrial fields involved in the cooperation between the two sides have continued to enrich, which is a major progress in China-France energy cooperation. At the same time, the China-France joint statement also involves the protection of ecological diversity, response to climate change, nuclear waste reprocessing and other fields, which means that China and France have also reached a certain consensus in responding to global challenges."

During Macron's visit to China, Business France organized a business delegation of small and medium-sized enterprises to visit China. Dong Yifan, head of the European Economic Project at the Institute of European Studies of the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, believes that this move represents that the economic and trade cooperation between Chinese and French enterprises is gradually becoming more detailed. Not only has the cooperation of large energy companies deepened, but small and medium-sized enterprises and even start-ups are also actively exploring the Chinese market. Under the "dual carbon" goal, there is huge room for cooperation between Chinese and French enterprises.

Complementary advantages, mutual benefit and win-win situation

Du Xiangwan said that China and France have the same strategic direction in the energy field. "A major lesson that the Russian-Ukrainian conflict has brought to Europe is that 'the energy rice bowl is not in its own hands'. If Europe wants to achieve energy independence and control, it must develop renewable energy. This goal coincides with China's current energy strategy. Although China and France currently have different energy structures, under the guidance of energy independence and control and carbon neutrality goals, the cooperation between the two countries in the field of renewable energy is unprecedented."

"France has mature nuclear energy technology and related industrial chains, and has rich experience in overseas project development. China is not only a major renewable energy manufacturing country, but also a strong country in technology and application, and has advantages in the field of renewable energy. For France, renewable energy is indispensable to reduce its excessive dependence on nuclear energy and promote energy transformation." Dong Yifan said, "Under this circumstance, China and France can form a good complement in the energy field and reach in-depth cooperation in industrial chain, capital, personnel exchange and other aspects."
